What is an Optometrist

Optometrist

Optometrists are primary health care specialists trained to examine the eyes to detect defects in vision, signs of injury, ocular diseases or abnormality and problems with general health.

A detailed examination of the eye can reveal conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes.

Optometrists make a diagnosis, offer advice and when necessary prescribe, fit and supply contact lenses or glasses.

Referrals for specialists advice may be required

Optometrist

Once optometrists have qualified they have the opportunity to develop their interests in specialist aspects of practice such as paediatrics, contact lenses, low vision,

Optometrists can choose to practice in a number of settings for example in independent or private practice, in a hospital eye department or in research or teaching.

Optometrist

Optometrists( in Europe) are graduates who have undertaken a three or four-year degree course in optometry followed by a period of at least a year in supervised practice before taking professional qualifying examinations which lead to registration.

Optometrists (previously known as ophthalmic opticians) test sight and prescribe

glasses; they also screen patients for signs of ocular disease and refer them to medical practitioners for treatment when necessary. They are skilled in monitoring patients suffering from eye disease.

Optometrists provide eyecare in the community and by doing so they often relieve the burden on hospital ophthalmologists.

Optometrists are also qualified to dispense spectacles, fit contact lenses and prescribe low vision aids.

Next, they must attend an accredited 4-year optometry school and, after graduation, they must pass written and clinical state board examinations. Some optometrists go on to obtain a master’s degree or Ph.D. in visual science, physiological optics, neurophysiology, or public health. A 1-year postgraduate clinical residency is available for optometrists who want to specialize in one of the follog areas: Contact lenses Family practice optometry Geriatric optometry Hospital-****d optometry Ocular disease Pediatric optometry Primary care optometry Vision therapy

Mission

A unique feature of our department is its connections with eye departments in various hospital, Jordan University Hospital, and Princess Basma Hospital, Al- Housein Medical centre, Prince Hamza Hospital. This offers the students with a great opportunity for clinical practice in variety of clinical setups. Also, we have a good relationship with private hospitals and private optometry shops where we send our students to train

Labs and facilities

We believe that a successful program requires the proper matching between theoretical knowledge and practical experience, so the department has established various training labs to serve that purpose.

1- Refraction Lab: This is a university-****d lab where students practice the basic techniques for refraction. It is divided into five cubicles, each one is equipped with the necessary instruments and tools for refraction. It also contains a slit lamp, a keratometer and two phoropters. This lab opens for students and university staff to come and check their eyes by the students during their lab sessions.

2- Glass preparation Lab: This lab is equipped with necessary instruments and tools for glass design and preparation.

3- Primary eye care unit/PBH:

This unit is ****d in Princess Basma Teaching Hospital. It is a newly established lab to serve dual purposes: training students and serving people visiting the eye department in the hospital. The lab contains four sections: The refraction rooms, The eye care room supervised by an ophthalmologist, The contact lenses and Low vision testing rooms, and lastly the computer room with internet access..
