Reptiles


Reptiles by definition is a cold- blooded vertebrate that live on land and has a backbone



An endoskeleton and water proof skin with scales or plates.


? What do reptiles have in common


Some people think that reptileshave slimy skin. But reptiles have dry skin with scales.



Their skin is waterproof. This helped reptiles become the first vertebrate group to live on land.



Reptileshave several characteristics that help them live on land.



1they breathe with lungs.



2 their skin keeps water inside their ****.



3reptile eggs are tougher than amphibian eggs.



All of these characteristics helped reptiles live on land.




Scientists classify reptiles into four smaller groups, called orders.



There are four main orders of reptiles.



They are tuataras, turtles, lizards and snakes, alligators and crocodiles.





They are the smallest order.



They are endangered.



They live on islands near New Zealand.



Turtles and tortoises




Some tortoises can live more than 100 years



Sea turtles can swim up to 9 kilometers '6miles' per hour.



Lizards and snakes




They are the biggest order.



Lizards eat insects. Snakes eat meat.



Many snakes are not dangerous. Others are poisonous.


Alligators and crocodiles



They are the closest living relatives to dinosaurs.



They can eat prey as big as a deer.



They weigh up to 900 kilograms[1ton]!
